Support for Beijing’s city network U

nder a new, three-year agreement, Cassidian is to support and maintain Beijing’s JustTop TETRA network.

Included in the contract are services such as software maintenance, hardware repair, a help desk, on-site and emergency support, and third-party equipment support. Serving 76 000 subscribers, JustTop is the largest digital trunked network in the Asia-Pacific region and the biggest citywide TETRA network in the world. It was put in place by Cassidian in 2003 and has been extended four times since. Galvin Wong, regional chief executive for

secure communication for Cassidian, said: “We are proud that we have built a long- standing trustful relationship with JustTop, the operator of the Beijing Government

Shared TETRA Network, since we co- operated to build this Government Shared TETRA Network 10 years ago. We have succeeded in securing the 2008 Olympic Games and multiple big social and political events in Beijing. Tis new contract shows that we are committed to make the network stronger, more efficient and flexible to meet the new challenges of security communication.”

n Besides the 60th National Day celebrations in 2009, the system was successfully used at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. On the day of the opening ceremony for the Games, the TETRA network successfully handled 1·6 million calls – a world record at the time.

E Ambulance service takes a lead E

ngland’s North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) is leading the way in messaging

as the first to adopt the new TETRA Messenger service from network operator Airwave. Following a successful trial in the latter

part of 2011, NWAS has procured the service for a three-year term and placed an initial order for 330 devices. TETRA Messenger is a secure, resilient,

two-way messaging and alerting solution, which provides messaging on Airwave’s secure TETRA Network. GPS functionality built into the pocket device enables the control room to pinpoint the whereabouts of on-duty responders and manage resources more effectively during an incident. “The device is simple and easy to use

and offers users the functionality to store up to 40 pre-defined messages. In the past our responders were unable to respond

in a situation which made it difficult for us to know who was available and where they were located”, said Ray Lunt, NWAS programme director. The pre-programmed responses

(‘respond and react’) can be easily integrated into existing control room systems, giving the operators access to real-time updates. “It is a robust messaging device

with the added benefit of receipt acknowledgement”, added David Sangster, Airwave’s UK services director. “It is a world first and offers significant advantages over analogue paging systems.”

n The Airwave TETRA Messenger was a finalist in the Best TETRA Innovation category at the inaugural International TETRA Awards 2012. The ceremony took place in March. Details: page 30.
