Infrarail opens its doors for the ninth time
Rail infrastructure show expected to draw 5,000 visitors to NEC T
ransport minister Theresa Villiers is to formally open Infrarail 2012, which takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from 1-3 May. She will also be making a keynote speech later
that day, as part of the exhibition’s seminar programme. Five thousand professionals from the rail
industry are expected to visit Infrarail to see the thousands of products on display from more than 200 suppliers. Visitors will also be able to attend seminars, talks and networking events. Simon Kirby, managing director of
investment projects for Network Rail, will give a presentation on Thursday 3 May, with Howard Smith, chief operating officer of London Rail at Transport for London, speaking on 2 May. New to the show this year will be The
Yard, a feature that will enable suppliers of large plant machinery to display products that are too big to be featured on their stand. The Track will also be back, sponsored by Tata Steel, allowing rolling stock and associated equipment, to be displayed. A
Networking Zone provides the space for visitors to the show to meet contacts, while a Networking Reception takes place on Tuesday 1 May from 16:45-18:30. Live demonstrations will also take place
on the on-track displays – lengths of track laid in the hall to allow companies to show their products in-situ. The Platform will be an interactive
discussion forum over the three days. Topics that will be discussed include Innovation in the Rail Sector and Bridging the Skills Gap. Among the panellists will be Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley and Paul Cooper from The Young Rail Professionals. Visitors will also be able to use the Recruitment Wall, displaying exhibitors’ vacancies. There will be an awards dinner on 2 May,
also at the NEC, with the Infrarail Awards presented by special guest Pete Waterman. To find out more about the awards, or to book your place, email

Signalling success
Invensys Rail will be showing its modular signalling solution, the latest generation Westlock software-based interlocking and its European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) solution. Westlock, which is already in use in
parts of the UK, Australia and mainland Europe, is capable of controlling an area of railway network many times greater than that of a traditional solid state interlocking system – as well as a larger number of trackside objects. Invensys will also be discussing its
ERTMS equipment, particularly with regard to the Thameslink Key Output 2 programme. The resignalling of London Bridge Station will see the introduction of an Invensys ERTMS solutions, which will be overlaid in the London Bridge area to enable all train movements to be controlled automatically, delivering up to 24 trains per hour in each direction when the Thameslink Programme finishes in 2018.
