nybody who has spent any time in the Big Canoe area is familiar with the hospitality and delicious

food to be found at the Appalachia Grill in Marble Hill. Krissy Fitts, who owns the restaurant with husband Jason, has the ability to make you feel right at ease the minute you walk into the restaurant. “People comment that I always act like I’m so happy to see them,” stated Krissy. “But I promise you – I am not acting! I am happy you are here, I really am!” And it shows. Krissy, Jason, and their dedicated staff

pride themselves on making you feel at home while offering fine food and attentive service. Krissy’s husband, Jason, is the masterful chef in the kitchen. While the menu changes seasonally, customers have come to love and expect regular menu items such as the iceberg wedge with creamy blue dressing, the sweet garlic and bacon salad, the Georgia mountain trout served with truffle butter, steamed asparagus and sautéed shitake mushrooms or the slow roasted pork served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Also popular is the 8 ounce burger special with side, available every day for just $7. Diners are always anxious to hear about the daily special.

Guests also love the “Recession

Specials” which are offered every Tuesday through Thursday evening. For only $9.99, diners can enjoy fine food at an excellent value. The children’s menu is also a bargain. The small fry in your family can order a hamburger, chicken fingers or a grilled cheese sandwich – all served with French fries – for only $4. And if they

clean their plates, they will receive a free dish of ice cream to boot! Speaking of ice cream, desserts

change daily and are made fresh in the kitchen. Save room for the crème brulee, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake or flourless chocolate cake! The Appalachia Grill opens for dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and serves Sunday brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. But that’s not all! The big news is the opening of the Fitts’ new restaurant, The Tavern at Wolfscratch Village, in late March. Located inside the gates of Big Canoe in what used to be the IGA Express, The Tavern will be able to accommodate approximately 100 guests. The two areas will be connected by an indoor staircase. The upstairs will be outfitted with high top tables and chairs and will have more of a bar atmosphere, complete with TV’s everywhere. Outdoor seating will be available on the terrace. Downstairs,

an additional bar is being built in front of the old IGA Express coolers, which are being redesigned to accommodate beer taps. The downstairs will be furnished with booths along the walls and tables in the middle for a very casual feel.

According to Krissy, the emphasis is on casual - casual clothes, casual menu selections and a casual pub- sports bar ambience. The Tavern will be a place you can come to right after a tennis match, a round of golf, or a dip in the pool. Bring the kids, wear your flip-flops, and relax! Tracy Mundy, one of the very creative cooks currently working at Appalachia Grill, will be handling the cooking at The Tavern. The menu will be completely different from Appalachia Grill, featuring casual fare such as wings, sandwiches, cheese fries, salads and single, double or triple hamburgers. The Tavern will be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. The Tavern will also be available for functions and will offer offsite catering and meals to go. Jason and Krissy are thrilled to be working inside the gates of Big Canoe. “When I thought about what ‘Living Well’ meant, I realized that it’s not just about the food – it’s really an overall lifestyle,” remarked Krissy. Krissy’s

mom has lived in Big Canoe since 1988, so Krissy has spent a lot of time in this area. Krissy and Jason met in 1998, working at the restaurant when it was called the Countryside Café, and got married in 1999. They purchased the restaurant in 2007, and have made it their goal to provide consistent quality food and service. “What we love about Appalachia is the personal connections with our guests,” Krissy reiterated. “What a wonderful way to live, serving a community that cares about you and your family.”
