good night’s sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity, not just for a person to feel good, but to be
productive, to learn, to have an active memory, and to be healthy. Sleep USA, with a new mattress
superstore just opened in the Jasper Mountain Highlands shopping centre in Jasper, has taken a holistic approach to the importance of sleep, and how selecting the proper mattress can lead to dramatic improvements in sleep quality.

Finding the right mattress for you can make the difference in how well you sleep.
According to the US Department
of Health and Human Services, the average adult sleeps less than 7 hours each night when research suggests that at least 7-8 hours of sleep are needed to be well rested. As many as 70 million Americans may be affected by chronic sleep deprivation at an estimated annual $16 billion in healthcare costs and as much as $50 billion in lost productivity. Sleep USA has built its business
with 5 stores operating under the guidance of its mission statement: “We know that better nights
mean better days. It is our mission to directly improve the quality of our customers’ lives by custom fitting them to the quality sleep set that best suits them. Our focus is not selling the most expensive bed—it’s selling the right bed. So we will provide quality products, exceptional service and expert guidance to ensure that our customers feel better today because they slept better last night.” Sleep USA staff are trained in the

elements of sleep science that relate to the importance of a mattress fitting the sleep style and habits of their clients. Being versed in the stages of sleep and how the role of a good and properly fitted mattress can encourage sleep during those stages is critical in helping to pair people with the mattress that will encourage the best quality of sleep. Sleep USA cites studies that have
been performed to determine the benefits of a good night’s sleep. In one study it was found that volunteers who were allowed to sleep for a solid 8 hours after receiving instructions for a task were much more productive and successful in completing the task than others who were required to complete the task without the benefit of sleep. In other studies it has been shown
that the heart rate slows and blood pressure dips during periods of deep sleep. Insufficient sleep or sleep that
is frequently interrupted doesn’t allow the cardiovascular system to slow down, causing potential conditions for stroke, angina, irregular heartbeat and even heart attacks to be more likely. Further studies link sleep
deprivation to auto-immune deficiencies, obesity and even an elevated likelihood, in women who sleep less than 7 hours each night, of developing diabetes. One of the greatest obstacles to
a good night’s sleep is circulatory distress which is caused by pressure that occurs somewhere in the body while reclining. Circulatory distress causes restricted blood flow which can damage or even destroy cells. The body responds to the restriction by saying “move or die.” The body moves and in doing so disturbs the continuity of sleep.
Support in a mattress can imply firmness that diminishes comfort. Sleep USA suggests that support and comfort can be balanced to the client’s requirements. They use the example of a floor that provides total support but no comfort or your favorite couch that provides comfort but no support. The goal of a Sleep USA Expert is to
introduce you to a mattress that is “comfortably supportive” to promote a better night’s sleep. Typically, Sleep USA maintains
floor models of at least 40 mattresses, each having different characteristics of support and comfort. When guided by a trained Sleep USA Expert, a properly structured search can narrow the selection to a small number of mattresses that best suit the client’s needs. The role of a good mattress
in promoting healthy sleeping is broken down into two categories: support and comfort. Sleep USA says “comfort is what you feel when you go to bed at night. Support is what you feel when you wake up.” Sleep USA wants you to wake up
feeling good, because that’s a great way to start your day.
