Mobile in Barcelona


Richard Lambley reports on some of the innovations on display at the global mobile industry’s principal annual get-together – the Mobile World Congress


L


ast month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona set new records for the mobile industry’s biggest event, with


more than 67 000 visitors from 205 coun- tries attending. T e four-day conference and exhibition hosted more than 1500 exhibit- ing companies, which occupied 70 500 net square metres of exhibition and business meeting space. “T e record numbers that attended this


year’s event underscore how central mobile is to the lives of people around the world”, commented John Hoff man, chief executive of GSMA Ltd, the show organizers. “T is is also illustrated by the breadth of companies that participated at Mobile World Congress, with representation from not only the traditional mobile industry players but companies from vertical sectors such as automotive, health and fi nance, among others. It’s exciting to see the powerful role mobile has in driving innova- tion in new markets.” T ose attending included international or- ganizations and government delegations from more than 140 countries.

Tracks and themes For 2012, the main conference programme fea- tured dedicated tracks on applications, cloud computing, embedded mobile, mobile adver- tising, mobile health, mobile money, next-gen- eration technologies and OSS/BSS, as well as sessions exploring business strategy, developing markets, devices, network capacity, regional is- sues and social media.


Among the exhibition halls, more than


50 000 visits were made to App Planet (below), a feature designed to bring together elements of the broad mobile application ecosystem to- gether in one location. Several of these exhibi- tors staged application developer conferences. Other events included a series of forums,


this year addressing augmented reality, LTE, the Mobile Cloud and mobile security.
