The ultimate outdoor ‘boys toy’?

SGBintroduces the GTrek GPS data logging system E

very so often, there is a product that takes your breath away. On first glance at Slide trade show 2012 in Telford, it was easy to avoid John Bird and GTrek’s small but subtle stand. It was only after a healthy dose of persuasion that the SGB team agreed to take a look. We were certainly glad that we did.

GTrek monitors your movement and allows you to create a highly detailed graphical record of where you have been, how far and how fast. Using GPS technology in an opposite way to the technology seen in cars, watches and phones, the G-Trek tells the individual not where to go but where you have been.

“The GTrek is perfect for skiers, bikers, golfers, track-day enthusiasts and almost any other outdoor activities” says John Bird. “The product uses GPS satellite technology and records your exact position at regular intervals, to build up a

picture of your movement. The product comes included with software to allow you to see where you’ve been using Google Earth’s topographical mapping, of Google map or Memory Map.”

The product really kicks into life when the data is downloaded onto Google Earth and overlays your route onto an image of the ground in 3D. When pressing ‘tour’, it plays a virtual tour of the recorded route. The software also provides a Geotagging facility. This involves being able to take pictures and download them to your computer, merge the recorded route with the pictures and then you can see not only the pictures and when they were taken but where your were when you took them. This gives a whole new meaning to ‘showing your friends and family the holiday snaps.”

With Bird keen to showcase to the independent retail market, this presents outdoor

retailers with options to invest in a

product with undoubted potential. With the GTrek retailing at £99.99, the product is certainly affordable to consumers seeking the latest sought after gadget. The product also appears to be versatile so the retailer is not constrained in what market to sell to.

Aside from the obvious advantages for consumers, the product offers opportunities for retailers. “We offer a full 30% mark up on the device for retailers and a full technical back up and service support,” said Bird. “This is a brand new product and nothing can match our software involved.”

The product really needs to be seen to be believed so why don’t you find out for yourself?
