Making the network cost-efficient By streamlining and simplifying the way networks and hosting capacity

are set up, businesses can better balance short and long term goals. Nathan Bell - Director, Products and Marketing, Telstra International, looks at both immediate and long term cost efficiencies to describe what businesses can do to optimise their networks.

ith businesses needing to save money, it is now a

truism that the top priority for CXOs over this and the coming year will be to enable growth, whilst controlling costs and operational complexity through greater operational efficiencies and productivity improvements. With the business landscape becoming more complex, the CIO or CTO must now simultaneously manage short and long term priorities whilst aligning business and IT goals.

A good indicator of these concerns is Telstra International’s recent Asia CXO survey which highlights that short term IT management cycles are hindering CXO effectiveness. The report also reveals the top management priorities amongst the 364 CXO respondents surveyed globally, and shows that around 50% of CXOs see aligning IT and business goals (54%), controlling costs (47%) and business continuity (41.5%) as the top three management priorities for 2012.

The report shows growing pressures to innovate, manage costs and use IT to gain competitive advantage against a difficult economic backdrop, whilst facing resource reductions for strategic planning and unrealistic expectations from within the business. Although the

majority of CXO’s recognise that IT can create competitive advantage and enable innovation, the report recognises that their effectiveness is challenged by ongoing cost management and reduction pressures, according to over 60% of respondents. With a level of IT agility now key to survival, limited financial resources means making the best use of a legacy network can sometimes be the only option.

The most effective way of achieving these priorities from an IT perspective therefore involves driving cost efficiencies by maximising the potential of a business’s network and ‘sweating’ it in the way that any other business asset would be subjected to in the midst of a recession. There are four key ways to achieve this:

Ethernet

One technology that goes a long way in addressing this proposition is Ethernet. Over the past two years enhanced Ethernet offerings have become increasingly viable for international networks. They can now help to optimise a wide area network (WAN) to offer increased data transfer and cost efficiencies despite rapidly escalating bandwidth requirements. The upgraded and expanded Ethernet capabilities
