tal with a father and son waiting and watching trackside. One shot shows a 4-8-4 bursting out of the bore; a later shot featuring an A-class articulated was also made. Link’s flash lit up the smoke and steam to great effect. The twin tunnels are still in daily use by Norfolk Southern. It’s a short drive to the tunnels from Christians- burg. Take U.S. 11 east and turn left onto Den Hill Road. Best light is in the afternoon. Just east of the tunnels on U.S. 11 is the barnyard and silo at Shawsville where Link photographed cows being driven while a train climbed toward the tunnels in the dark. West of Bluefield, Link’s dramatic daytime shot of a Y6 exiting the tunnel onto the bridge at Coopers is still there for the taking (except for the Y6). Best light is in the afternoon. Note that Coopers is on the east side of Elkhorn Mountain. It can be found just a mile south of Bramwell off of U.S. 52. A sim- ilar bridge can be found on the west side at Maybeury.
