NEW STACK SERVICE FOR MAERSK: BNSF Railway will operate an expedited “Flag- ship” double stack service for Maersk Line con- tainers between Asia and five destinations in the United States. The Chicago, Dallas, Hous- ton, Memphis, and Northwest Ohio Flagships will provide dedicated nonstop rail service to and from the West Coast over BNSF rails. The Northwest Ohio Flagship will move traffic over CSX between Chicago and the new Northwest Ohio Facility in North Baltimore, Ohio, where containers for East Coast destinations will be transferred to existing CSX trains.
Central Oregon & Pacific
SISKIYOU ROUTE REDUX? In February the Coos Siskiyou Shippers Coalition an- nounced that it would apply for a Federal Transportation Investment Generating Eco- nomic Recovery (TIGER) grant to finance the rehabilitation of the embargoed Central Ore- gon & Pacific Siskiyou route. Owned by Union Pacific and leased to CORP, the Siskiyou pro- vides a more direct outlet for forest products from southern Oregon moving to California than does the active Union Pacific route, which requires traffic to be routed north over CORP to Eugene, from where UP moves it south. The line has several tunnels which need to be enlarged in order to accommodate large, modern diesel locomotives and freight cars larger than AAR Plate C. Most notorious is Tunnel 13, which partially collapsed in No- vember 2003 after the timber lining caught fire, forcing the line’s closure until March 2005. Then in 2008 CORP closed the Siskiyou route south of Ashland, Ore., after shippers chose to truck their freight rather than pay higher rates which the railroad wanted to charge due to the expense of operating and maintaining the rugged line.
Great Eastern Route
NORTHEAST REGIONALS JOIN FORCES: RailAmerica’s New England Central (NECR) and the privately owned Providence & Worces- ter (PWRR) have teamed up to form the Great Eastern Route between Canada and Atlantic Ocean port facilities in Rhode Island. The Great Eastern Route will provide seamless service between NECR’s current interchange with Canadian National at St. Albans, Vt., southern New England, and ports located on the Providence & Worcester via the connection at Willimantic, Conn. P&W serves the Port of Providence and the Port of Davisville in the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown, R.I. (The Port of Davisville is switched by Seaview Transportation.) The Great Eastern Route will offer stream-
lined service for traffic to and from the west routed over Canadian National, and also for Canadian Pacific haulage traffic moving via the Vermont Rail System between Whitehall, N.Y., and the NECR connection at Bellows Falls, Vt. Operational changes may include CN power and crews from Montreal running through St. Albans to Brattleboro, Vt., which will regain importance as a division point, and
Brazilian SD80ACe’s Painted, Shipped
SIX OF SEVEN Vale Mining SD80ACe’s (Nos. 101-107), the last locomotives to be completed at the Electro-Motive Diesel plant in London, Ontario, have been painted by Canadian Rail Colli- sion & Refurbish in its facility at VIA Rail’s Toronto Maintenance Center. Nos. 107 and 102 (above) had been delivered in primer on flatcars (RAILNEWS, March 2012) in late December 2011 and were nearly ready for shipment aboard those same flats on February 12. EMD hurriedly moved the units out of the plant around Christmas, before the company locked out members of the Canadian Auto Workers on January 1. On February 3, EMD’s parent company Progress Rail Services announced that the plant would be permanently closed (see RAILNEWS, April 2012).
New Order of Canadian Pacific GE’s Arrives
FRESH FROM THE FACTORY ON ITS FIRST REVENUE RUN, Canadian Pacific ES44AC No. 9356 led a pair of SD40-2s on the second section of train 241 at Puslinch, Ontario, on Febru- ary 25, 2012. It’s part of an order for 30 units numbered 9350-9379 for delivery in 2012.
