OIA seeking increased profile on the national political agenda
T
he Outdoor Industry Association has stepped up its national lobbying efforts with a view to improving the profile of the outdoors on the national political agenda.
Recently, OIA Chief Executive Andrew Denton, along with Dave Turnbull of the BMC, met with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Mountaineering (and all things outdoor activity related). That meeting led to an exchange in the House of Commons on the 9 February. This has been seen as a small but significant step, in developing a closer working relationship between the OIA and the government stakeholders in tourism, health and sport, with the aim of promoting increased outdoor participation amongst the UK population. These early ideas behind the project will be presented at the OIA conference in March.
A
t the Outdoors Show in January, Bridgedale received the Gold award for Best Walking Sock for the seventh year in a row.

Carolyn Dunn, Bridgedale Sales & Marketing Manager says: “We know Bridgedale have the best walking sock and are delighted that The Ramblers have agreed with us for the last seven years. Winning the award again is amazing and we are already looking forward to next year.”

White water rafting banned on the River Tay
A
nglers on the River Tay have been successful in a bid under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 to prevent white water rafting on four stretches of the Tay on prescribed days of the week during the salmon fishing season.
The court ruling is the first to regulate access to any stretch of water. This action is the first of its kind and may well have wider consequences for other Scottish rivers where angling and white water rafting compete for access to the same stretches of rivers. Among others, the Sprey, Garry and Lochy also play host to anglers and white water rafters and this may be the first of several attempts to balance the interests of anglers and rafters.
The rest of the UK has taken its cue from Scottish decisions relating to the Land Reform Act and this could therefore have far reaching consequences.
This information was supplied by Lynn Richmond, Senior Solicitor, Turcan Connell who represented the anglers.
aglöfs has been given the ISPO Award for its new ski jacket- the Vassi. The award was presented to Haglöfs at a ceremony at ISPO Munich - the leading international sports business trade show that took place from 29 January to 2 February 2012.
Haglöfs' Autumn/Winter 2012 ski jacket Vassi has been developed in close collaboration with professional free skiers and Haglöfs Friends Per Jonsson and Asbjørn Eggebø Næss. The aim behind Vassi was to create a ski jacket capable of meeting the requirements of even the most passionate skiers.

The jury, comprising international sport journalists as well as experts from trade and design, chose Haglöfs' jacket based on criteria such as innovation, design and performance. "The Vassi jacket is a combination of many good details that a jacket must have in order to be especially user-friendly," says Kuno Prey, Professor of Product Design and jury member. "We have been working to extend the collaboration with our Haglöfs Friends for some time, aiming to incorporate their experience, thoughts and ideas into our product development process. The award is confirmation that this strategy has been successful," explains Nicholas Warchalowski, CEO of Haglöfs.
