David Lama becomes the first to free-climb the southeastern flank of Cerro Torre

A

thlete David Lama finally succeeded in free climbing along the legendary Compressor route on the Cerro Torre on 21 January 2012. After three years David has achieved what was long thought to be impossible. He is the first climber to ascend the imposing 3128m granite tooth in Patagonia via the southeastern flank without technical aids.

The Tyrolean professional climber took advantage of a relatively stable break in the weather to secure him a place in the record books by free-climbing the Cerro Torre via its south- eastern flank. In achieving this exploit, David has fulfilled a long-held dream.

"For me, being the first to free-climb Cerro Torre's south-eastern flank marks the end of what is probably the greatest adventure of my life. I'm really very proud to have been able to reach the peak without having to insert any additional bolts. I've learnt so much in the last three years. Climbing amongst these imposing mountains is simply awesome. I was able to make dreams come true!"

UK’s culture and heritage sector gears up for tourism boost from London 2012 Olympics

E

mbracing our cultural heritage as a revenue stream in the Olympic year is crucial to the success as a tourism hub and economic power, say leading industry figures.

The National Trust, English Heritage, Historic Royal Palaces, The V&A, Tate, British Museum and National Gallery are among over 100 organisations that will come together to discuss how the sector can maximise opportunities presented by the London Olympics 2012.

From location filming to e-commerce and developing killer product ranges, the Association for Cultural Enterprises (ACE) 13th Annual Convention & Exhibition, will explore innovative ways in which the sector can engage and attract an estimated four million additional overseas Olympic visitors during the recession and with no additional government funding.

John Stachiewicz, Chairman of ACE and Publisher and Head of Media Group, National Trust, said: “Heritage remains the most cited reason for people to visit Britain and currently renders a turnover of in excess of £1 billion a year. The Olympics present the perfect opportunity to boost this figure significantly, which is why it is important that we have the

necessary knowledge, skills and ideas to effectively engage with overseas visitors. The ACE Convention will help the sector to do that.”

The two day event on Thursday 8th & Friday 9th March at Brighton Dome will bring together senior industry figures including Baroness Andrews, Chairman of English Heritage, and the convention’s host, Janita Bagshawe, Head of Museums and Director at the Royal Pavilion.

Laura Wright, CEO of Tate Enterprises, and a judge of the prestigious Best Product Awards, said: “The Convention is very timely this year with museums organising their programmes around the Olympics. We need to get thinking about how we can best display our attractions and gear our products to the UK inbound visitors so that they return. The convention will build confidence, skills and generate ideas about how to do that.”

The Convention will be followed by the biggest UK heritage retail trade fair, with over sixty stands representing the leading suppliers in the cultural heritage sector. It will culminate in the Prodir Best Product Awards, which recognise excellence in retail and publishing in the museums and heritage sector.

Conservation Success at ISPO Munich

F

ollowing a snowy, but extremely busy ISPO, the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) announced the raising of over €6,500 during the show to support projects in 2012.

With the sale on its stand of bicycle-powered healthy breakfast smoothies, sponsored by Nikwax, as well as the sale of goody bags, with which participants could pick up a whole host of exciting items from EOCA members’ stands, €5,200 was raised. A further €1,400 was generously donated to the association by the ISPO trade fair itself – raising the money through donations for drinks and snacks at the Snow Ice & Rock Summit during the 4 days of the show. Commenting, Markus Hefter, Show Director of ISPO said, “We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the exhibitors and visitors alike, and are delighted to be able to give such a significant donation.” Buoyed by the success of the donations ISPO has vowed to raise even more in 2013!

With 100% of funds raised through shows and membership fees going directly into the conservation projects, the show has taken EOCA a step closer to its aim of having raised its first million Euros for conservation since its inception 6 years ago.
