ith only 3 weeks to go until the OIA’s annual conference and AGM, I feel it is important to touch upon the event as this year promises to feature many important issues the outdoor industry needs to address.

The OIA has been particularly busy with lobbying efforts stepping up this month. Andrew Denton, along with Dave Turnbull of the BMC, met with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Mountaineering with a view to improving the profile of the outdoors on the national political agenda. This led to an exchange in the House of Commons.

This was a small, but crucial step, in developing a closer relationship between the outdoor industry and the government. Hopefully this will lead to an increased outdoor participation among the UK population and ultimately lead to the outdoor industry having more say on issues regarding health, sport and tourism. Mr Denton will be presenting his ideas behind the project at the OIA conference and hopefully by this time discussion with Westminster will have progressed further.

The Chinese market is obviously a highly important issue and I am particularly looking forward to hearing Roger Zeng, President of the Chinese Outdoor Retailer Association, presenting his views on how the Chinese market is impacting on our industry. This should prove to be a fascinating conference and hopefully give retailers and suppliers a few new ideas.

If you see me at the conference please come and say hello and have a chat about any issues you would like to see the publication covering.
