Feature Sports Nutrition Retailers Guide to Sports Nutrition
Alex Fordham canvasses the views of England rugby nutritionist Matt Lovell on why sports nutrition is important to sports participants of all ability and the subsequent benefi ts to retailers.
Alex Fordham: Hello Matt, what is your background as a sports nutritionist?
Matt Lovell: I started working with the England rugby team in 2002 and was part of Clive Woodward’s team that lifted the World Cup in 2003. I was also a member of the team who against all odds reached the fi nal of the 2007 competition. I am still employed in this role alongside working as a sports nutritionist for London Wasps, Saracens, Tottenham Hotspurs and UK Athletics. My latest role involves acting as a brand ambassador for Kinetica.
Fordham: Why are sports nutrition products important to athletes of all ability?
Lovell: People are leading increasingly busier lives and often don’t eat well enough. Nutrition products allow people to maintain quality
nutrition whilst having a demanding work, family and training schedule.
Fordham: There are so many nutrition products on the market, are they all essentially the same?
Lovell: No, not at all. There are some low quality products out there that should be avoided. Consumers need to be wary of budget proteins with loads of nasty fi llers and milk sugars that can cause fat gain and digestive issues.
Fordham: So it is only budget proteins that can cause health issues? Lovell: Many nutrition powders can cause digestive issues if you take them in too little water- they have an eff ect in the gut, drawing in water irrespective of the quality.

tips to help athletes improve performance?
Lovell: Fish oils. A multi vitamin, some protein powder or bars for snacks, a specialist recovery blend depending on the training you are doing and ZMA before bed.
Fordham: Moving on to the retail side of things, how can retailers sell nutrition products more ably? Lovell: Retailers can sell the products a lot more eff ectively by basically being more informed. Shop staff should try the products themselves, be aware of what’s in the products and know a little bit about how they work. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way.
Fordham: What products do you think shop staff
should recommend for before, during and a er exercise?
Lovell: Before training I like to use amino blends to switch on the mind and prime protein synthesis. During I use BCAAs blended with tyrosine and after exercise I use either protein or 100% recovery products depending on how long I’ve been training.
