Port of Hayle H

ayle is a small town in west Cornwall that is situated at the mouth of the Hayle River. The parish, which was created in 1888, shares boundaries
with St Ives, St Erth, Gwinear, Gwithian and the Celtic Sea. Settlements from as far back as the Bronze Age have been detected in the Hayle Estuary. Modern Hayle was largely created during the late 18th and 19th centuries as a result of local industry and related shipping. Evidence of Iron Age settlements exist and some believe that Hayle, was an important centre for the neolithic tin industry.

odolphin House is a 15th century house that was the home of the Godolphin family until the middle of the 18th century. The building you see today is only part of the original Tudor and Stuart house. Large parts of Godolphin House were demolished in 1805, including the 16th century hall when the place was converted into a simple farmhouse. The Duke of Leeds sold the remnants of Godolphin House in 1929. The interior is furnished with some beautiful examples of
furniture and tapestries. Within the grounds there is a range of farm buildings including the original Elizabethan stables.

Poldark Mine 04
oldark Mine was the scene of tin working from prehistory to the 1880s. The first evidence of tin
production is the Poldark Mortar Outcrop, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Here, in prehistoric times, tin streamers crushed their ore before smelting it into tin. By 1493 tin working was well established and the
Duchy of Cornwall issued a lease for the continued use of the water powered tin stamps (possibly the world’s first instance of this) and rights over the leats (a man made water course) which today still bring water to the site’s water wheel. Recent exploration has uncovered levels driven from
the valley which have been dated to the early Medieval period. The main mine workings were first worked by tin streamers who had discovered a lode in the bed of the River Cober and followed it into the hillside. It is here that visitors start the mine tour. Described as one of the two most atmospheric mine tours in Europe it is the only complete underground tin
mine in Cornwall open to the public. Poldark’s Museum contains a number of rare exhibits includes items from a unique military regiment, the Royal Cornwall and Devon Miners Militia. The Museum is supplemented by three separate audio visual presentations. A new exhibition opened jointly last year by the British Ambassador to Mexico and the Mexican Ambassador to the UK outlines the fascinating story of the Cornish mineworkers overseas. Other exhibits on the site include the Poldark Cornish Beam Engine which was the last to pump commercially in Cornwall. This ceased working in 1959 and has recently been restored to pump once more. The unique Holman Traversing Winder is also working following restoration. More than just a tin mine Poldark offers a range of craft activities, a picnic area, café, children’s play area, a Children’s Trail and Dog Walking Trail.
To the north and east sides of the house there are some recently discovered remnants of the old gardens that include raised walks and carp ponds. These are currently undergoing restoration and clearance. It is hope that these will be open shortly. The ancient gardens provide a place of peace and calm. New family trails and behind-the-scenes tours are also on offer to visitors. The surrounding countryside draws a lot of attention from visitors with lots of archaeological features.
