Mining Heritage T

he tin found in this Area was very high quality. Mining started here hundreds of years before the copper and tin boom of the 18th and 19th centuries, when the cliffs and valleys clattered with the noise of continuous production and mining levels (tunnels) extended deep beneath the sea.

St Agnes reflects the influence of mining on the settlement, with its shops, pubs, hotels, chapels and public buildings like the Miners and Mechanics Institute (built to serve a growing population employed in the industry). At Trevaunance Cove, you’ll see the remnants of an old harbour, from where local copper ore was taken to South Wales for smelting. Frequently battered by Atlantic storms, this harbour had to be rebuilt four times before finally succumbing to the sea in 1916.

Inland, to the south and east, you’ll see many well- preserved smallholdings. You can also watch tin being crushed and separated at the fascinating restored Blue Hills Tin Streams in Trevellas Coombe. Walk the coast path to Cligga Head to see the dramatic influence of mining on the coastline here.
