IS there anybody rising up the ranks as fast as Avicii, otherwise known as the Grammy-nominated Tim Bergling who hit number six in 2011’s Top 100 DJs Poll.
Following in the footsteps of one of his inspirations, fellow countrymen the Swedish House Mafia, in treading the ever- thinning line between electro, trance and big room house, you can assess his current cadre by the company he keeps.
Up at the lofty peak of his chart is Skrillex’s remix of his own ‘Levels’, a monstrous peak-time banger that shows just how far dubstep has come since its Croydon roots (generally black with blond up
top). Not far behind, it’s the Swede’s own ‘Antidote’, an auto- tuned electro-rocker that again utilises wobbling mid-range bass, before an Avicii collaboration with undoubtedly the world’s most famous DJ, Mr David Guetta himself.
While this is the kind of colossal, planet-crushing sound you might expect him to ply given the massive audiences he plays to, there is still a hint of his deeper side. Maris’ remix of Julian Sanza’s ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ turns out to be a disco-infused tech-house groover, reminding us that Avicii’s not always about the power chords...
