16 Leader: Siân Harris The language issue
I am a native English speaker. I can communicate in a couple of other languages but the reality is that, rightly or wrongly, my mother tongue is becoming a de facto standard for scholarly communication. Sven Fund of De Gruyter highlighted this in his interview on page 30 where he reveals that the German publishing firm sets his editors targets of English-language signings. But it turns out that communicating with native English-speakers is not the only motivation for many researchers to use it. As I discovered when I spoke to librarians and researchers from across Asia (page 18), one of the big uses of English is to communicate with each other. When many totally- different languages co-exist in each country, the appeal of communicating and sharing research results in a language that many people, especially university researchers, have also learnt is understandable. But here the generalisations end. Research may be global but the challenges and situations are local. If you have any experiences as a librarian or researcher in any part of the world that you’d like to share with other readers please get in touch with me.
