New tool combines knowledge base with linking technology
OCLC has announced the launch of OCLC WorldShare License Manager. This new service is said to help libraries meet the increasing challenges and complexities of electronic resource management. The tool brings together knowledge about licences that govern their purchase and use, and linking technology that connects users to the content they need in a single place. License Manager is built on the OCLC WorldShare Platform and WorldCat knowledge base and promises to help library staff manage
the selection, purchase and availability of databases and e-resources. This new service consolidates link resolution, subscriptions, licenses, vendor, access and rights management to enable web- scale management, discovery and delivery of licensed and electronic resources.
License Manager is supported as a stand-alone service that integrates with other library management systems or can be integrated with OCLC WorldShare Management Services.

Springer launches SpringerPlus
Springer’s new open-access journal, SpringerPlus, is the publisher’s first open- access journal with a broad interdisciplinary approach covering the entire scientific spectrum. Papers from emerging areas of research are welcome, says the publisher, which is aiming for a transparent and fast publication process for the new title.
SpringerPlus will feature interdisciplinary manuscripts describing original research, case studies and methods.
It also accepts audiovisual formats, data reports, and extensive tables, either as complete articles or part of the paper. ‘SpringerPlus follows an interdisciplinary approach that allows us to bridge the gap for all those authors unable to find an open-access journal at the interface with adjoining disciplines for their research topic,’ explained Peter Hendriks, president STM global publishing & marketing at Springer.

Emerald Group Publishing has launched its Video Abstracts Showcase, an initiative that is said to provide an engaging platform for researchers to connect with their audience. These short summaries of recently published Emerald articles are filmed by the authors themselves, providing an overview and the motivation
behind their piece of work. According to Emerald, this new media stream allows authors to go beyond the constraints of the written word, maximise community engagement and encourage the growing trend for content to be shared online through social media channels.
