Caroline uses her talents to pursue dual career plans


Thirty-four-year old Caroline de Souza knows exactly what she wants from life.


Currently studying with the university at Tower Hamlets, Caroline, from Hornchurch in Essex, is determined to succeed as a teacher to give her students an exciting, challenging and pleasurable experience and show them that they can achieve anything they wish for with determination and hard work.


Caroline is currently enrolled on the Graduate Teaching Programme which enables her to qualify as a teacher via a rigorous year of teaching practice at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Hornchurch, while she is supported in her training by lecturers and tutors from the University of Cumbria, who provide the foundation of knowledge, teaching theory and skills necessary for her career.


However, Caroline also has another ambition which she is well on the way to achieving. Her first book Constable Colin the Carrot and the Case of the Missing Petits Pois has been published and is available to purchase from 6 February 2012.


Caroline and her sister, June, worked in partnership to create the book (with June writing and Caroline illustrating/ designing) and the pair have a further five books in the World of Little Eden series almost ready for publication, with an additional twenty titles in the pipeline. The books centre on a range of vegetable characters and their adventures in their natural environment, with an underlying purpose of teaching young children about the advantages of healthy eating.


Caroline says: “We would like to get our books into every bookshop and supermarket promoting healthy eating, and grow awareness amongst young children of the benefits of fruit and vegetables. The stories are fiction but introduce children to the real properties and environments that fruit and vegetables are grown in. I have also made a series of soft toys to accompany the books which I would like to see put in production.”


Caroline is no stranger to the publishing world as before enrolling with the University of Cumbria, she was senior art editor at Penguin Books, a role that influenced her decision to pursue teaching as a career.”My former employer is a world leader in the provision of quality, educational books and its core values are based on ‘helping people make progress in their lives through learning’.
