Our very own rising star

Deputy Director of Human Resources Paul Boustead was shortlisted in the ‘HR Rising Star’ Category of the prestigious Personnel Today awards.

The category recognises ‘up-and-coming HR leaders and practitioners that are set for a bright future’.

His nomination detailed Paul’s contribution to the university over a sustained period of change and the contribution he has made in ensuring that the institution has a positive future to look forward to. Paul played a key role in many of the restructures and in the development of the Supporting Staff in Transition programme and continues to be the HR lead for a number of areas including trade union relations, organisational change and HR policy and practice.

Learning of his shortlisting, Paul commented: “I am delighted to have been shortlisted. It came as a complete surprise because colleagues had nominated me without letting me know until after the submission had been made. It has been a challenging few years for the institution and we have achieved a tremendous amount, which has undoubtedly helped me learn and develop as an HR professional.”

University historian features in BBC4’s “Elegance and Decadence: the Age of the Regency”

In September, university historian Robert Poole appeared on television and in person to talk about the romantic age.

He was featured in part three of the BBC TV series Elegance and Decadence: the Age of the Regency, discussing the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 with presenter Lucy Worsley.

Robert comments: “The Peterloo Massacre was one of the political earthquakes of the nineteenth century, and I’m delighted that north-west events like this are getting the national attention they deserve now that the BBC has a big presence in Manchester.”

In the same week as the programme was broadcast, Robert also gave a lecture in Grasmere, talking about ‘The Poetry of Peterloo’ and the romantic poet Shelley. The talk was part of a series at the Wordsworth Trust linked to the ‘Shelley’s Ghost’ exhibition, which includes the sole surviving Peterloo banner, the world’s oldest political banner.
