Interactive travel roadshow
Students and staff took part in a very interactive travel roadshow in September, proving that everybody is looking for practical ways to travel to and from campus.
As well as welcoming representatives from Gates Travel and Virgin Trains to chat about services they can offer, a free ‘bike clinic’ was set up to fix those niggling problems. More than 24 people on the university’s Lancaster campus had their bikes looked over or repaired throughout the day.
Doctor Bike, from Lancashire County Council, looked at flat tyres, rusty chains and faulty brakes on all shapes and sizes of bike. Some of the first customers to bring their bike for the once-over included two of the forty international students who have chosen to hire a bike from the Velocampus scheme this year.
The bike loan scheme offers staff and students a chance to hire a low cost bike for up to a year. The loan scheme is managed by the Students’ Union and has seen its best year yet!
As well as picking up travel leaflets, offers and fun cycle route maps, some of the more enthusiastic participants hopped onto the bike to pedal up a tasty smoothie, perfect for a warm day on campus!
The pedal power equipment, provided by Lancashire County Council, mixed up the fruity treats using power generated by an attached bicycle.
Ian Rodham, travel plan manager at the university was delighted with the turnout at the event: “Today has been a great opportunity for everybody to come along and have a think about how they travel to and from the campus and around the city too.
“We are doing more and more to encourage our students and staff to consider cycling, car shares or using other public transport and we are trying to make it as easy and practical as possible for them to do this.”
