A refreshing opportunity
SU Relationship Agreement
The partnership between the University of Cumbria’s Board of Governors and Students’ Union (SU) is blossoming, creating a better deal for students.
In November, two representatives from the University Board and the SU launched the improved partnership by signing a relationship agreement, one of ten recommended actions in support of strong governance.
Stephen Henwood, Chair of the University Board, and Representation Sabbatical Liam Walker of the Students’ Union met to finalise the agreement.
The Good Governance Guide, supported by the national group Committee of University Chairs (CUC), recommends ten actions to support the development of a strong governance relationship between a university board and its Students’ Union.
The aim of the agreement is to form the basis of a strong and sustainable governance relationship between the union and the university.
The ten recommendations, which include a thorough induction to governance for students and a mentoring scheme for student representatives, will be delivered over the next 12 months.
The relationship agreement will work as a benchmark to guide those involved in the union’s governance in the future, ensuring sustainability for the positive partnership.
for students
New students starting this year were given a comprehensive guide to the local social life to help them enjoy their spare time.
Re-fresh, a 36-page glossy handout, was edited by university journalism students and given to hundreds of new students when they started in September.
The guide, published by the CN Group, gives an insight into life in Carlisle, Lancaster, Penrith and The Lakes and includes music venues, shops, gyms, bars, restaurants, sports events and nightclubs.
Four second-year students, Tom Little, Sarah Wright, Steve Ramshay and Jonathan Irving were involved in researching and writing the editorial. Steve, 20, said: “We worked closely with a production team from the CN Group and there were various campus visits and time spent working at the CN Group offices, liaising with editorial, design and advertising staff there, as well as gathering interviews, pictures and information for the magazine.
“We had seen some previous guides and we felt that we could produce something great as we have that experience of being students ourselves.
“The work we do through our course gives us great experience but we really benefited from working with the CN Group as we got to work in their newsroom and learn from experienced journalists. We have had some great feedback from them too.”
Nick Turner, Head of Digital Media at the CN Group worked with the students on the project. He said: “The students worked hard on planning, writing individual articles and even coming up with the name. The project has also given the students the opportunity to work on something with a real deadline, bringing their studies into the real working world. Hopefully this is just the start of our partnership with the university.”
