2011 JR Indoor Electric Festival

Horizon Hobby brought out their new Cessna 150 (above left). This beautiful scale model flies with a 250 brushless motor and flew great throughout the weekend. These strange UFOs are actually new ParkZone

eras. In fact Frank, at the risk of destroying the prototype, snapped a picture of me while Chris explained the features. Obviously the scale, IMAC, 3D and jet guys are going to want this radio. ElectriFly had a couple of neat planes, one

not really an indoor model but too cool to leave in Champaign was the Cosmic Wind “Little Toni”. Any lover of post-war air rac- ing knows all about the Cosmic Wind’s lega- cy. ElectriFly is now producing a 15-size model, perfect for club racing and features built-up flying surfaces with a fiberglass fuselage. It’s featured in red or white so the pilot can trim his or her model any way they like.

ElectriFly also showed a new flat foamy

and one that I had just built specifically for this event. Chris explained that many of the foamies on the market are designed after the popular Extras, Edges and Yak, so de- signing a 3D Citabria would be fun and dif- ferent. The model is made from their Pro- Formance Foam and is preprinted in the attractive starburst pattern. Frank gave a quick demonstration and did some very un-scale like maneuvers with

the Citabria. I seriously doubt Aeronca, and later Bellanca, had any idea that their entry into aerobatics aircraft would be modeled and flown like this! Scale maneuvers or not, the airplane is different and is fun. Around this time I was aware of a rather disruptive noise, not so different from a 4- stroke engine. Reassuring myself I was at an electric event, I realized the perpetrator of said noise was my stomach. Fortunately, Terry has thought of everything and has al- ways taken care of his pilots by searching for some of the best food vendors you will find at any event. This year we had a grill with happy folks

ready to serve you everything from donuts in the morning to hot dogs, Italian sausages, Gyros and pepper steak sandwiches and everything in between. The food is served up hot off the grill with a smile and is inexpen- sive enough to leave most of your cash for the fun stuff in vendor row. With my biological fuel tank topped off, it

was time to see what really makes this event so much fun, the flight line. Advancement in 2.4 GHz technology has certainly allowed one to fly a lot more and, while not every
