Howard Ike DGA-5

Another view of the fuselage just before sheeting (above left). Stringers may be tapered and glued to the outside of F14 as shown here, or butted up against

rear rigging blocks a little over-length and glue them in place. Trim and taper the out- er ends of the lower spar caps. Block sand the wings to taper the trailing edges and tips, smooth over sheeting joints and rigging blocks, and round out the leading edges, be- ing careful to avoid damaging the ribs. Drill ¹⁄₈-inch holes in the center of the leading edges for the wing dowels. Drill a ¹⁄₁₆-inch hole through each rigging block to pass the rigging wires.

the front of F14 (above right). Sheeting has been added between stringers to allow for clean exit slots for the tail pushrods.

Test fit the plywood spar joiners, J1 and

J2, using the wing dowels to position them. Trim away the bottom spar cap in this area as necessary. Block sand a slight angle in the root ribs to make a uniform flat fit to each other when the wing halves are as- sembled and the wing tips are raised 1 inch each. When satisfied with the fit, assemble and glue the two wing halves together with the ply landing gear spar joiners and both wing dowels. Make sure the leading edges

and trailing edges meet evenly and there is about 1 inch under each wing tip for proper dihedral. Join the wings using slow cyano or white glue or epoxy so you have time to make sure everything is straight and the di- hedral is set correctly. Assemble the aileron ribs and leading

edge parts to the aileron core and glue to- gether. Block sand the top and bottom sur- faces to smooth out the edges and bevel the leading edge to form a straight hinge line.
