Peter Jones A

CEO, Associated British Ports

s the chief of the UK’s largest port group, Peter Jones holds the keys to the nation’s maritime trade.

The publicity-shy Jones was appointed CEO of

Associated British Ports in April 2007, following its takeover by a private equity consortium led by Goldman Sachs, and subsequent de-listing from the London Stock Exchange. It was a difficult time to assume control, with the recession only a year away, but despite the precipitous

Iain Liddell MD, Uniserve I

ain Liddell is one of freight’s great self-made men. He launched Uniserve 27 years from a Portacabin outside the port of Tlbury. The company has

subsequently grown into the largest privately-owned UK freight forwarder, and can justifiably lay claim to be a genuinely global logistics concern. In 2010 it sealed a merger deal with Metro Shipping

to create the largest UK freight concern, marrying Uniserve’s traditional strength in imports with Metro’s export volumes. The deal brought significant new investment to Metro, allowing it to invest in new

John Lloyd General Manager, Virgin Atlantic Cargo J

ohn Lloyd is responsible for the UK carrier’s cargo operations worldwide. He began his cargo career in 1985 at Gatwick Handling, and joined the airline,

three years after it launched, in September 1987 as a cargo operations officer at Gatwick airport. He rose through the company to become general

manager, operations and general manager cargo. He became a director in May 2000. Virgin Atlantic began its cargo days by outsourcing to Aircontact, but when the founder, Sir Richard

than 350 destinations, and in 2009 won the contract to handle the cargo operations for Virgin Australia. This year, Air Australia appointed Virgin Atlantic as

its cargo partner. Virgin, which has won some 28 awards since 1990

for its cargo services, is renowned in the industry for its customer focus and service.

Tilbury, but Liddell has been a canny investor in property, and as the largest UK supply chains increasingly look to portcentric solutions, his ownership of a parcel of land just outside the port of Felixstowe will allow it to provide clients with these sorts of solution, especially given the long-term growth that the port expects to see following its investment in the Felixstowe South redevelopment.

decline in volumes the group has continued to deliver steady returns to its shareholders. He was formerly CEO of Mersey Docks & Harbour

Company, and has worked in ports and shipping in both in the UK and Europe since 1977. He has also previously served as non-executive

director of specialist freight insurer TT Club, as well as the United Kingdom Major Ports Group, an important ports lobby organisation which has proved remarkably effective in influencing government policy.
