both carriers’ cargo operations. The two airlines carry in excess of 6,421 CTKs of freight each year, with a combined revenue of €1.35 billion. BA is one of the few European combination carriers

John Harvey Transaid I

f one man can be said to be the figurehead of transport charity Transaid it is John Harvey. He joined it in 2000. Since then, he has largely been responsible for the

way in which it has become the principal industry charity in the UK, with its programme of training truck drivers in Africa having contributed to a substantial reduction in roads deaths in the continent. He began his business career with Unilever in 1957,

and was later named Chairman of SPD the conglomerate’s UK logistics subsidiary, becoming

responsible for its 1968 investment in Tibbett & Britten. He served as Chairman of Tibbett & Britten for 20

years, until its sale to Exel in 2004. Harvey has also served on the executive board of the

Jason Keegan Head of Logistics, Marks & Spencer T

here are a number of UK shippers that could be placed on this list. The UK high street is a busy place – at least it was, until the recession cut a

swathe through it, which it continues to do. There are of course all types of shippers in the UK –

both importers and exporters (it is often easy to forget that the UK remains the world’s sixth largest manufacturer) – but the retail industry has been at the forefront of globalisation. And Marks & Spencer has

been at the forefront of retail. This position was cemented by M&S’s head of

logistics Jason Keegan’s public support for Maersk’s call last year “to change the way we think about shipping”, decrying the traditionally transactional relationship between shippers and shipping lines and calling for far better service levels. He took the role in July 2008, joining from New Look, where he had restructured the entire supply chain.
