INDUSTRY NEWS EDITOR’S COMMENT: Stuart Gilroy

EARLY January is an opportune time to reflect and plan for the future. The New Year, by its nature, provides the context for reassessments and new beginnings, a time when our senses are more sharply attuned to what we really want in life, and perhaps the best time to set in stone strategies that build on your ambitions for growth and

survival. The most successful strategies will be those that are closely aligned to trends and are contextual to the needs of customers. Indeed, 2012 could be a watershed year in terms of these determining factors. Headline changes that are defining tomorrow’s world of comms are the sudden emergence of consumerisation as a transformational trend and the speedy ascent of smartphones, putting mobility into the stratosphere, while the countdown to 4G will inject a more powerful boost. Such high thoughts are also sobering. These trends are just two movements within a sea of change impacting the comms and IT space, and they really do signify a trundling tsunami wave that will sweep away those who are unprepared for a landscape populated by roaming digital natives thriving within a socially networked and highly collaborative environment. The opportunities are huge, so look sideways at what’s coming, plant your flag, secure your stake, recognise the cloud as a key component of your future plan, become part of the evolution and rise to the challenge. Not so long ago we scratched our heads and wondered how we ever survived without email. Already, as part of the digital evolutionary process, email is facing the possibility of extinction because it lacks true context. The ability to provide real time collaboration will

ensure that you remain relevant to the emerging social enterprise where having context means everything.

Gizmo raises a good ViBE

POWERNET claims to have solved the problem of deliver- ing quality voice over basic IP networks and is seeking chan- nel partners to roll out its new ViBE solution to SME busi- nesses across the UK.

The Milton Keynes-based

ISP says its ViBE box – no bigger than a paperback book – uses a number of unique and patented mechanisms to cost effectively deliver high quality, resilient data services over low cost data links.

Powernet – which is now part of the Timico Technology Group – has developed the prod- uct in the UK and claims appli- cations range from bandwidth optimisation of IP voice traffic, through to circuit mirroring for packet sensitive applications such as Citrix, and bandwidth stacking for areas with poor data connectivity.

Innovation has been key to Powernet’s success over the years as MD and founder, Tony Tugulu, explained: “We were at the forefront of using ADSL for managed networks back in 2003 and we are keeping our focus on innovation and R&D.

“The channel provides an excellent opportunity for ViBE to address a number of service

constraints suffered by small and medium sized businesses. We are excited about the new market opportunity that ViBE will bring to resellers and fellow service providers.”

Founded in 1995, Powernet was one of the first ISPs to get the UK online. Over the years the firm has secured an impres- sive client list that includes big names such as Dominos, Travis Perkins, Silverstone and Sheffield City Council. Today Powernet specialise in providing resilient WAN solutions as well as hosting, network security, IP voice and mobile device management.

AVG ramps up security for mobiles

ICT security giant AVG has introduced a toolkit to help resellers fully grasp the business mobile security opportunity and deliver their own campaigns. The move is designed to help partners address the rapidly growing increase of mobiles, tablets and smartphones in workplace infrastructures. The toolkit includes a guide to working on the move, a report on the SMB market landscape, banners for marketing materials and landing pages to help part- ners create their own electronic direct mail campaigns.

“SMBs need reminding that for all the economic uncertainty today’s ‘threat landscape’ is not standing still,” commented Chris McManus, AVG’s UK and Ireland VP of Sales. “Our research shows there is a drift towards mobile platform usage in business with Android in particular taking off.” AVG currently has 3,000 partners in the UK and Ireland and has been channel focused since 1991.

“While the majority of our resellers still come from a data background the explosion of converged solutions in recent years has led to us partnering with more and more comms resellers,” added McManus.
