From the Field: Mayport (Fla.) Chapter Members of the Mayport Chap- ter donated $4,325 to help build a house for wounded warrior Marine Corps Cpl. Tyler Southern, who became a triple amputee after an IED exploded when he stepped on it while serving in Afghanistan. The earmarked donation was given to Homes for Our Troops, a nonprofit organization that builds adaptive houses for severely injured veterans at no cost.

Cmdr. Dale Ruskosky, USN-Ret., second vice president and ROTC chair, asked members of the Mayport Chapter and his local Rotary Club to support the project after seeing Southern on a TV news program. Southern, who once was a member of a Junior ROTC unit the chapter supports, now lives in his new home with his wife, Ashley.

Heart of Texas Chapter Five students received scholarships from the Heart of Texas Chapter. Sarah A. Frazier’s $2,000 scholar- ship honored late chapter member Lt. Gen. Harry A. Goodall, USAF. Four “Freedom Is Not Free Scholar- ships” also were presented. Ashley Nichole Brinegar received a $1,500 check, and Andrew Bowles, Brenna Lynn Arnold, and RiccaJ Joslin each received $1,000 checks. During a separate ceremony, Heart

of Texas chapter members presented $650 scholarships to Air Force ROTC

Cadet 1st Lt. Daniel Sessions and Cadet Capt. Ashley Hwang. The ca- dets belong to one of two ROTC units the chapter supports at Baylor Uni- versity in Waco, Texas.

Norman (Okla.) Chapter Members of the Norman Chapter awarded $750 scholarships apiece to three ROTC cadets from the University of Oklahoma-Norman. Maj. Gen. Rita Aragon, ANG-Ret., Oklahoma’s secretary of Veterans Affairs, presented the scholarships on behalf of the chapter. The chapter’s 340 dues-paying members fund the scholarship pro- gram through individual donations and by holding raffles during the chapter’s monthly meetings.

Olympia Area (Wash.) Chapter Olympia Area Chapter members donated $500 in 2010 to the Puget Sound USO, which operates facili- ties at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. After an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, planeloads of military families began arriving at both USOs, which quickly ran out of supplies. Members responded by donating an additional $1,200. Col. David Slotwinski, USA-Ret.,

says chapter members also donate annually to Fisher House and Santa’s Castle at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and help send area children to the Northwest Youth Leadership Confer- ence in Tacoma, Wash.
