FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ARE HEALTHY FOR EVERYONE, THOUGH MANY PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO EAT THEM. It’s recommended adults eat two cups of fruit and two to three cups of vegetables daily; recommendations for children vary by age. Creative cooks can incorporate vegetables into every meal and sometimes change the minds of picky eaters. These tips can make vegetables more palatable for all:
A Military Genealogy
t some point in our lives, most of us de- velop a curiosity about our ancestry. When those ancestors are military veterans, the infor-
mation-gathering process can be greatly aided by the large number of military genealogy resources now available. A good starting point for your search is the National
Archives (
www.archives.gov). Only a fraction of that in- formation is available online; much more is on microfilm. This can make an in-person visit to the Archives building in Washington, D.C., quite rewarding. Joining a genealogy community such as
wc.rootsweb
.ancestry.com is another way to dig up information that can point you in the right direction. You can join forces with other people doing similar research on the site. The World War II forums (
www.ww2f.com) also offer person- to-person services. For those willing to mount their own expedition into the jungle of online databases, several aggregate sites can help. Some include: • Access Genealogy,
www.accessgenealogy.com/military; • Allcensus,
www.allcensus.com/ww2.html; • Cyndi’s List,
www.cyndislist.com/us/military; and • Military Indexes Online,

• Involve children in grocery shopping, and let each child choose one or two fresh vegetables. Then let the child prepare the vegetable with you to create some- thing special for the entire family. • Accommodate preferences by serving vegetables separately or mixed in with other foods. Colorful mixed vegetables can be served on a corner of the plate (or in a small dish) or mixed into macaroni and cheese. • Add (or hide) vegetables — carrots and celery in spa- ghetti sauce, carrots or yellow squash in meatloaf, or thinly sliced mushrooms or tomatoes on pizza. • Have a family competition for a week. Count each helping of vegetables, and keep track of the different vegetables everyone eats each day. • Keep it pleasant. Take care that veg- etables don’t seem like punishment. — Rear Adm.
