1v1 BASHORE How did you get started playing field hockey?

I started playing hockey when I was 15. I didn't have a fall sport and I loved playing sports. I didn't like it at first because it was hard and I wasn't good but I got to hang out with friends and kept playing.

How has field hockey changed your life? There are so many ways. Essentially it has been a chain reaction. I started playing field hockey; I went to college on a scholarship at Indiana University; I tried out for the National Team and made it, and now I get to play hockey as my job. So it's so hard to say what my life would have been like if I had not played, but I am so lucky I did because I would have never made these friendships and traveled the world.

Where has field hockey taken you around the world?

I've traveled so many places. I've been to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Russia, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Brazil. There could be a few more places…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? Geographically, anywhere! Personally, in the next 5 to 10 years, I would like to have a family and a career. A career that I love doing just as much as I love playing field hockey.

What do you enjoy most about being on the National Team? My teammates. The friendships. Working hard with others to achieve the same goal. Competition. There is not just one thing I enjoy most. It is a mixture of all these things that makes being a part of this group so great.

Are you interested in coaching/umpiring and staying involved in the sport in the future? This sport has changed my life. I want every kid to know that it can do the same for them. There is so much to learn about life through sport and I want to be able to share that with anyone that will listen!

When you are not playing hockey, what do you like to do? I love to do anything outside – tennis, hiking, biking, swimming, camping. I love taking photos and traveling! Now that it's cold, I learned how to knit and bake and cook. One day I'd like to open a coffee shop so I like to go to new ones when I can…and obviously try their yummy treats.

What is the best advice a coach has given you?

Make your fundamentals the best they can be because that is all hockey is. Oh and go to where the pigeons are.

What memory of the game do you have that you will treasure forever? (from Barbara Marks, Charlottesville, VA)

I would say qualifying for the 2008 Olympics and Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. 46
