Dutch contract for upgraded system
General Dynamics UK has been awarded a £3.4 million contract to upgrade the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps’ (RNLMC) New Integrated Marines Communications and Information System (NIMCIS).
This upgrade will bring the Dutch force’s tactical communications system in line with the recently delivered British Armed Forces’ Bowman CIP 5.4 capability and ensure continued interoperability between the two allied forces. Called NIMCIS 2, the contract will run for 18 months and will be delivered in three phases.
“Our existing work on NIMCIS has proved a key enabler
to making the Dutch Marines interoperable with other allied forces, especially with the UK’s Royal Marines,” said Dr Sandy Wilson, president and managing director of General Dynamics UK. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to once again put this valued international customer at the cutting edge of tactical communications as we upgrade NIMCIS to NIMCIS 2.”
According to Brigadier General Rob Verkerk, Director of
Operations Royal Netherlands Navy and Commandant Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, the NIMCIS 2 uplift is an operational prerequisite which is most welcome. He said: “The NIMCIS 2 upgrade ensures the command and control systems of the Dutch LPDs and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps are fully interoperable with the UK armed forces and with the bilateral UK/NL Amphibious Force.”
Since 2006, NIMCIS, which was delivered by General Dynamics
UK, has provided the RNLMC with a standalone, secure voice and data communications infrastructure capable of supporting a range of network-enabled C4I systems. General Dynamics UK was also responsible for installing the NIMCIS system in 300 RNLMC vehicles.
NIMCIS 2 will include a new version of ComBAT (Common
Battlefield Applications Toolset), which provides enhanced battle planning thanks to new communications information planning tools. It will also have a robust tactical internet, improved situational awareness and lighter equipment for the troops to carry.
Training Systems BCIP training
contract award General Dynamics UK has been awarded a three-year contract to support the use of the ComBAT digital command and control system as part of a British Army training course that is a key component in the education of officers who will go on to command operations.
The 30-week long Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land), delivered by the Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham, is the British Army’s senior staff course and educates all newly promoted majors. A major component of the course is the Operations Module which provides

officers with the skills to plan and execute military operations in today’s complex environment. Digital command and control systems, of which BCIP 5.4 ComBAT is the key system at the tactical level, play an important role in this and, following this contract award, all new majors in the Land Environment will now have to use BCIP tools to successfully complete their staff training.
Using IT hardware and infrastructure provided
by SERCO under on-site contractual arrangements, General Dynamics UK will support Army-provided training on Bowman Training Environment software maintained under the Joint Battlespace Training and Synthetic Environments (JBTSE) Software Support and Maintenance Contract (SSMC).
