Industry: STAG Review

particularly catching the eye. They were not alone in showcasing retro with Head displaying their new range of retro tennis bags.

For many retailers, the past 2 years have been a real struggle with survival the main goal. Dave Baker from Terrasport told SGB how his business had been affected. “Trading has been a real struggle, there is no other way to describe it.” “Overheads have had to be cut massively and the business has been stripped back to just me essentially. It really is a case of having to go back to basics.”

With survival the main aim for many retailers, STAG provides an opportunity to speak to suppliers face-to-face and secure deals that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Baker added, “Without STAG, I wouldn’t be able to survive.”

This view was echoed by Simon Attwood from Academy Sport. “STAG provides us with a good starting point with manufacturers. With supplier prices constantly going up, our margins are being squeezed all the time.”

“STAG offers us the opportunity to assess the next trends and secure deals with workable margins”

Ricky Chandler has ambitious plans for STAG moving forward into 2012. “We will have 500 members by the end of the year and next year we will be expanding into the Irish market.” STAG are also planning to target new retailers and the foundations of this could be seen at this show.

“Five retailers who haven’t opened a shop yet were here. This is very promising for our industry

and hopefully shows that small businesses are starting to grow again.”

As 2011 draws to a close, STAG represented the very essence of business throughout the UK; an industry severely affected by recession but with strong indicators of a future that is beginning to look a little less bleak. Let’s hope that 2012 is a good year for us all!
