Industry: Buying Groups View from the industry
With 2011 drawing to a close, INTERSPORT UK General Manager Tom Foley looks at what lies in store for the buying group in 2012.
INTERSPORT Q3 2012 SHOW – 10,11 & 12 January 2012
J
anuary 2012 will see INTERSPORT host a 3 day Buying Show for its members. The event takes place at Cranmore Park, Solihull. Q3 is a key time for BTS and team sports and with 45 suppliers attending, 4 Exclusive International campaigns and further Exclusive National campaigns, the event promises to be our biggest yet.
The key dates and time are as follows; Tuesday
10 January 2012 10am-6pm
Wednesday 11 January 2012 9am-6pm Thursday
12 January 2012 9am-4pm
It was impossible to do everything in a 2-day show so January sees the event move to a 3-day extravaganza! As 2012 is such a big event year, it was decided a 3-day show would be needed due to the upcoming Olympics, Euro 2012 and with the event falling in a key ‘back to school’ period.
There is also a fantastic evening event planned for Tuesday 10th sponsored by NIKE who will be bringing their footballing might in the form of a top English Premiership player. This evening of fun and entertainment is to be held at the Village Hotel.
The OLYMPICS and EURO 2012
The Olympics brings a massive challenge and a huge opportunity, at the very least raising the profile of sports which we can activate through key supplier partnerships. The last couple of years have been very tough for this industry so it is hoped the Olympics will galvanize consumer confidence. The Olympics usually improves retail sales for the sports industry and with the added bonus of being in London, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a bumper year.
With Euro 2012 and the summer being the busiest time of year anyway, getting the timing on promotions and support around the Olympics is critical to ensure that the sports trade achieves incremental business with a true legacy for the future.
The FUTURE
In the past 12 months the focus has been firmly on developing the marketing and communications of the INTERSPORT group and building on the strong supplier relationships we have. The plans for 2012 focus on building on this with key supplier partners in focus categories offering a selection of exclusive products and campaigns from the likes of Adidas, Asics, Babolat, Canterbury, Nike, Salomon, Under Armour and many more. The INTERSPORT brand has huge credibility and it is easier working with suppliers as a membership under a single identity.
The last 2 months has also seen increasing member participation in the group with three Regional Meetings held in Glasgow, Birmingham and London giving members and the Head Office team a great discussion forum. This was followed at the end of November with the first Rugby and Football Steering Committee made up of 12 key members specialising in these categories to agree a group strategy.
