Dunrobin Castle Championships, October 22nd
FraserWilson reports: These were held for the 12th time on October 22 at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie. Competing for the eleventh time was
Andrew Hall, Upminster, who proved that perseverence does pay off by winning the overall Gledfield Estate Crystal Trophy as Overall Champion at this year's competi- tion in addition to winning the Dunrobin Gold Medal for Piobaireachd. Running this year for the 12th time, this competition has become one of the main events in the piping calendar. The aim of the organisers is to provide a platform for up and coming young pipers who have not yet won any of Gold Medals at The Northern Meetings or the Argyllshire Gathering. Alastair Sharp from Kyle of Lochalsh was the only competitor in the Chanter competition. This was very disappointing for the organisers as this competition is intended to give the beginners and introduction into competition and to gain confidence. Cameron MacDougall, from Tain, played well against some stiff opposition to win the Sutherland Estates Cup as Overall Champion in the Under 25 years section. The Under 18 years was won by Norman Gillies, Ullapool, (son of the late Pipe Major Alasdair Gillies) who ‘swept the boards’ by winning all the competitions in this section. The competition committee are extremely grateful to Sutherland Estates, the Jordan Foundation, Jean Sutherland, Scottish
