dance. There are some very attractive slow and stately strathspey dances. One of my favourite strathspeys is Tulloch Gorm which was also a favourite of Robert Bums. I am sure he would have known it as a slow
F
strathspey, possibly with words. The Standard on The Braes o’ Mar is a very old tune, but I do not know when Mhairi’s Wedding first appeared. If anyone does I would be interested to hear from them.
Donald MacDonald
OLLOWING the publication of the Donald MacDonald book I thought that it would be useful to give my interpretation of his method of scoring. The first conclusion here is that the double echo was a MacCrimmon
invention which the MacArthurs did not readily adopt. In D MacDonald’s MS, however, there are some tunes with double echoes correctly scored. They may be copies of tunes from other manuscripts. Below I have interpreted the ground of the Lament for the Departure of King James, devoid of double echoes in D MacD’s book and yet it plays well the way I have written it. Unfortunately most pipers, including myself, find the scores difficult to follow unless I rewrite them as I have done here.
