Fabulous little shops


Our lovely, mainly pedestrianised, town centre makes ambling around the shops a relaxing and enjoyable past-time for fell weary legs.


Twice a week, on a Thursday and a Saturday, is the popular market which brings people in from miles around. There have been traders in the Market Square in Keswick (Cese Wick in Old English meaning Cheese Farm) since Edward I granted a charter in 1276.


There’s much more than cheese on offer today, the market sells all sorts of things from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat, pickles and cakes and from pet beds and second-hand books to plants, slate signs and clothing.


It’s nice to explore the rest of the shops, especially those you find tucked down the many alleyways, for unique gifts and locally produced goods.


It’s in these alleyways that courtyards open up and many small family businesses are secreted away.

Most of the art galleries are off the main street and they sell photographs, paintings, pottery and jewellery by local artists and craftspeople - many of which are not available anywhere else in the UK.


There’s the best selection of outdoor shops in the country - whether you love running, walking, climbing, biking, sailing or skiing - and there’s not much you could need that you wouldn’t pick up in town.


It’s worth pencilling in a day for mooching about the shops while you’re here.
