Before you walk - make a plan The sun’s out and you’re ready for a lovely walk over the Lakeland fells. There’s just one little thing you may have forgotten though - does anyone know where you are going? Each year many B&Bs and hotels find themselves in a difficult position. Late at night, guests they know are out on the hills but haven’t returned. Should they call the mountain rescue, or just hope for the best?


Local retailer George Fisher has come up with a solution - the Walk Plan. Distributed free to accommodation providers around Keswick, the Walk Plan allows guests to fill in details of where they are going and leave it with reception. Just a simple tear-off pad of forms that might make all the difference if walkers get into difficulty.


Mark Hodgson, leader of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team says: “We’re happy to support the Walk Plan because anything that encourages people to consider their equipment and route before they venture out is a useful thing. Plus, if something goes wrong, it gives the team a reference starting point.”


Every year, people get into difficulty on the fells and are rescued by volunteers from Keswick Mountain Rescue Team. These unpaid volunteers have full time jobs and the team relies entirely upon charitable donations to keep up their vital work.
