By experimenting with more aggressive outfitting, refined hull designs and cockpit placement, the capabilities of playful touring kayaks are also continually improving. Still, Day is quick to recognize the necessity of change. “You also need to be free to take some risks and move in a new

direction,” he says. “If you want people to get excited, you need to give them a good reason.”

Meanwhile, Confluence is taking a measured response to the SUP fervor. “We are a very dis- ciplined organization that stays focused on our core competencies,” Rechner says. “However,

we continue to observe the trends in SUP and will enter the category when the moment is right.” Regardless of where players in the industry lie, there is a general

consensus that added buzz in the market is a good thing, no mat- ter what niche is impacted most. “Anything that gets people into paddlesports, into the stores,

widens the exposure and focuses any additional attention on pad- dlesports is a good thing,” says Rechner. Day cautions, “Tere may be some folks who are buying stand-

up boards now who might have bought touring kayaks in the past and that could be hurting demand in some segments.” But, like Parmenter and Rechner, Day recognizes the potential of SUP to draw new faces to paddling. “I think there are also people who are getting into standup for its

fitness or lifestyle aspects who would not have been in the market for a kayak,” he says. “It is certainly possible that SUP will help to grow the market overall. And maybe some of those folks will be interested in a canoe or kayak a few years down the road.” •
