20 Leader: Siân Harris Networking the Web 2.0 way

Five years ago, when Charlie Rapple wrote her fi rst article on Web 2.0 for us, I confess that I was sceptical about what differences these technologies would really make. After all, I had carried out pretty effective real-time networking over Unix-based systems in the 1990s without it making any difference to my research. Nothing ‘Web 2.0’ seemed particularly novel to me – and it was hard to see how it might revolutionise research and publishing. Little did I anticipate how much

communication I would do via Facebook today or how many professional contacts I would build up through LinkedIn – not to mention how guilty I’d feel for not tweeting more often! Charlie’s update (page 20) reveals how

Web 2.0 has become an important part of how publishers communicate and suggests that many could do more. And there could be more change in store as our Web 2.0 guru David Stuart reveals on page 13. If you’re at Online Information this year, visit us on stand 560. I’ll also be speaking in a seminar on 1 December about some of the key trends of the past decade.
