Planned Care Retirement Living

T

he MetLife Mature Market Institute has released its “Plan- ning Tips: Financial Consider-

ations for Family Caregivers,” available at www.metlife.com to help the many Amer- icans who lose a considerable amount of money when they take time from their jobs to care for their aging parents and spend their own funds to do so. A recent study found 10 million em-

ployed caregivers in the U.S. lose an esti- mated $3 trillion in wages, pensions, and Social Security benefits over a lifetime if they leave the workforce prematurely; the average losses are $304,000 a person. That does not include additional out-of-

pocket expenses related to caregiving, such as travel costs, contributing to a par- ent’s household, and purchasing items needed by the care recipient. Among the topics discussed are: • checking with your employer about flex-time or special excused leave and how to replace your workplace benefits, should you curtail employment; • taking stock of what you have and what caregiving will cost you; • public benefits; • Medicare and Medicaid services; • costs to keep your loved one at home, such as meal delivery; and • hired geriatric care management. The publication also contains an an- notated list of resources where caregiv- ers can get more help.

The Real Warriors Campaign by the De- fense Centers of Excel- lence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury offers tips and advice for main- taining a relationship during deployment. Don’t be caught off-

guard. Experts say to seek help from a sup-

port group, counselor, or chaplain if: • the spouse at home feels overwhelmed, • the deployed service- member feels helpless to support the family, • problems keep you from daily tasks, • either spouse feels isolated or alone, or • there is awkward- ness or nervousness. Find out more at
