U Prevent Foreclosure
nder the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), military personnel are offered mort- gage payment relief and protection from foreclo-
sure. Several U.S. banks have bolstered these programs. Fannie Mae allows wounded warriors and spouses of servicemembers who have died in combat to apply for a mortgage payment forbearance of up to six months. “No family impacted by a death or injury in the line of duty should have to face the additional burden of foreclo- sure as a result of hardship,” says Jeff Hayward, senior vice president of Fannie Mae’s National Servicing organization. Freddie Mac is delaying initial foreclosure proceedings for at least nine months after a servicemember is released from active duty, through 2011. For more information on the SCRA, visit

On Today’s Menu ...
I KNOW NO BETTER WAY TO MARK THE START OF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON than by host- ing a casual tree-trimming party and sharing with guests the first of many seasonal essences: ginger- bread, eggnog, and holiday cookies. Informal and homey foods can be prepared with- out too much fanfare. For my tree-trimming parties, I like to arrange a buffet with towers of bowls and dish- es on my kitchen counter. To keep with the spirit of informality, I sometimes welcome friends with pots of assorted soups bubbling away on the stove. This year, my table will be set with platters of roast beef, a variety of salads, and plenty of rolls, all of which can be made ahead of time. It wouldn’t feel like the holidays without an assortment of cookies. I offer my best homemade goodies alongside clus- tered grapes and clove- studded oranges. — Sandra A. Gutierrez
