t is a privilege to introduce myself to you as the new editor of SGB Sports.
ou’ll all be pleased to know that I finally managed to overcome my issues with the London Olympic ticketing system and have put myself forward for a host of tickets
for the Paralympics.
Wheelchair rugby (my nephews are big rugby fans), wheelchair tennis (my mum’s a big tennis fan), 7-a-side football (my dad’s a big football fan) and Paralympic equestrian (my wife’s a big horse fan) are amongst the events I’ve applied for.
As an introduction, my background is fairly untypical to the sports industry having studied politics at university and subsequently working in a variety of political PR roles.
However, as a young whippersnapper I worked as a sports retail assistant for Sweatshop so I feel I can put this experience to good use, now being on the other side of the fence so to speak!
I still can’t quite get my head around the process of applying well in advance of finding out whether I have tickets or not and then waiting to see what money disappears from my account, but nonetheless, it was decided it was a necessity that in one form or another my household needed to be involved with Olympic movement next year.
I must note though that I’ve not seen or heard any of the furore around Paralympic ticketing as I did when Olympic tickets could be applied for. While this makes me slightly more hopeful about my chance of getting tickets, it does sadden me to think that these events are prized less highly than those for able-bodied athletes. Tickets are also substantially cheaper than the main Olympic events.
My two main passions are writing and sport. To be able to combine the two in this role is one I am very excited about! My sporting background is of both playing and spectating. I currently play for the Mote Cricket Club in the Kent League and frequently play against county professionals, usually coming off second best! Aside from this, I am an avid follower of the mighty Charlton Athletic- yes I know someone has to!
I’m far from disabled, but as a person with an illness that can lead to disabilities I’m disappointed to think that this is still the case in the 21st Century.
In the coming months, I have strong ambitions for the magazine. Shortly SGB will undertake a facelift but retaining what has cemented us as a respected fi gure in the industry- that of industry- leading news, features and strong editorially driven analysis.
I hope I do get tickets and that the events are as good as they suggest they will be. If I do, I’ll be in the stands cheering on British hopefuls as they’ll have worked just as hard, if not harder, to feature on the world stage and deserve all the support we can give.
I look forward to seeing some of you at the STAG show on the 20-21 November, and if you see me, please introduce yourself and feel free to chew my ear off about any issues you feel we as SGB should be focusing on.
And if not, I’ll be tuning in to Channel 4 for live coverage. David Pittman, editor, SGB Sports
