Although it feels that this year has passed very quickly, no one can deny it has been a tough one for business. Are we going to have a good end to 2011? SGB asks Ricky Chandler – MD of STAG Buying Group


here is a feeling that December and the build up to Christmas will be a good one for Sports Independents. Sport will be high on the Christmas shopping list for parents with the Olympic logo now appearing virtually everywhere you look. Where has this year gone? Although it feels that this year has passed very quickly, no one can deny it has been a tough one for business. Are we going to have a good end to 2011? STAG members will be looking for large add on sales in the weeks leading up to Christmas helped with many special offers being made from market leading brands trying to attract additional sales. Many retailers that have not booked large forward orders for this period are now in an ideal situation to make the most of the attractive offers to boost Christmas sales. The last couple of years have been very diffi cult for consumers that bought online in December as the weather totally disrupted millions of deliveries. This should lead to consumers shopping locally this year to ensure their gifts will be ready in time for Christmas. The STAG Buying Show which takes place on November 20th and 21st is a huge opportunity for STAG retailers to buy Christmas stock as all STAG suppliers have put together extremely competitive offers to enable members to boost sales and margin during December and then again in the January sales period. The STAG Buying Show has increased in size and importance over the years and once again, both of our shows this year sold out many months before the Show dates. Why is this when many trade shows in the UK and Europe are showing a decrease in visitors and demand for exhibitor

space? Well the answer is in the title. It is a Buying Show! Everything we do in the planning, organisation and


investment in the show is with the sole purpose of ensuring the show pays off for everyone. STAG suppliers write great business and STAG retailers can take advantage of hundreds of show special offers. Gone are the days where companies can spare the time, money and resource exhibiting or visiting shows that do not pay off and do not provide additional sales and margin achievement for all. We invest heavily in the Buying Show by providing complimentary accommodation and meals for all STAG members and complimentary meals for all STAG suppliers during the two days. We also work tirelessly to promote and communicate all special offers to members attending prior to the show. The outlay of time and expense is crucial to the success of our shows. Without this and the investment from our members and suppliers; the STAG Buying Show would cease to be the continuing success that it has become year after year.
