Jake Niedling gives a safety presentation at the aluminum melting conference in October.

At the recent AFS Aluminum Melting Confer-

ence, Brian Cochran of Brian P Cochran & Associates, Wabash, Ind., presented “Te Hazards of and Regula- tions for Handling Aluminum Dross,” which highlighted aluminum dross regulations that are often overlooked in metalcasting facilities. Cochran also emphasized that although dross is

dangerous when wet, it is a recyclable byproduct and not hazardous waste. He spelled out how to store and register the dross, fill out the shipping papers, package, mark, placard and load the dross, and train employees. Te sold-out conference brought together more than 100

metalcasters to focus on the critical issues related to melting aluminum alloys on Oct. 10-12 in Dayton, Ohio.

Tyler Pipe Certified as Star Site for Workplace Safety, Health

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Adminis-

tration (OSHA) has designated AFS corporate member Tyler Pipe, Marshfield, Mo., as a “star” site for workplace safety and health. “AFS encourages all members to value safety and health

in the workplace, and Tyler Pipe can be considered a great example of excellence in this area,” AFS Director of Mem- ber Services Leo Baran said. Tyler Pipe earned star recognition following an on-site

evaluation by a team of OSHA experts. A “star” site is the highest honor in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs. Tyler Pipe manufactures gaskets designed to join drain- waste and vent pipes and employs 88 workers at its Marsh- field facility.
