movie top tips

Watch a 3D movie, note they avoid rapid changes of direction,

that’s because it’s closer to what we actually see – and how often do you spin from one image to another! So, when you’re panning, go slow and steady, if you want to speed it up, use a tripod for a smooth action.

It’s tempting to go for swift zoom and focus changes to add

pace, but you can’t quickly change your focus point in 3D, so it doesn’t help!

If possible avoid dark scenes. 3D glasses dramatically

decrease perceived brightness. So what looks creatively ‘moody’ in the lens, can become almost unwatchable. Lighting can help, but try not to put light directly into the shot as light ‘flare’ can minimise the 3D effect.

Try to create pictures that don’t crash out of the screen.

Think of your TV screen as a window and keep your image within the frame. It’s tempting to do otherwise to surprise your audience, but in practice it rarely works. Of course experiment if you like but be warned, even real life movie moguls are careful with their ‘crash and crops’.
