Bracewell & Giuliani bags former USPTO examiner Spivey

New York law firm Bracewell & Giuliani LLP has hired Jonathan Spivey as a partner in its Houston intellectual property litigation practice, the firm announced on October 11.
Spivey, a former patent
examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) joins the firm from Foley & Lardner LLP, where he was a partner in the Chicago office and head of the IP practice.
Spivey is a patent and copyright specialist who will focus on hi-tech industries, including soſtware, electrical, mechanical and computer technology.

Quinn Emanuel sets up new Washington, DC office

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP has opened a Washington, DC office aſter recruiting three
partners from Alston & Bird LLP in September.
Te office’s main focus will be representing clients in Section 337 investigations before the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
Paul Brinkman, Alan Whitehurst and Alex Lasher have joined the firm as partners and will be based in its new Washington, DC office.
Quinn Emanuel partner Jon Corey has moved from Los Angeles to become the new office’s managing partner.

Alston & Bird has reacted to the loss of three of its ITC lawyers by announcing that it has recruited ITC expert Jamie Underwood as a partner from Adduci, Mastriani & Schaumberg LLP.

Underwood will be based in Alston & Bird’s Washington, DC office.

Drouard’s practice focuses on intellectual property, information technology and data protection law. He has has experience in transactional, regulatory and litigation matters at the French, European and international levels.

Spanish firm Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has appointed Leonor Chastre as a new partner, it announced in September.

Edwards Angell merges with Wildman Harrold
Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP and Wildman Harrold Allen & Dixon LLP have merged to form a new firm.
Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP launched on October 1 aſter partners from Edwards Angell and Wildman Harrold approved the merger in August.
Te new firm has 14 offices in the US, UK and Japan, as well as an associated office in Hong Kong. It also boasts 650 attorneys, including 100 in its intellectual property practice.
Mergers and acquisitions lawyer Walter Reed is the new firm’s managing partner. He said: “While [October 1] marks the official launch of Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP, I am pleased that attorneys from the legacy firms have already worked together successfully over the last few months to enhance our client service. Novagraaf bags new heads for its UK IP divisions
Dr Tracey Cooke Tom Farrand announced in October.
Cooke was previously assistant general counsel at pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. As managing director, patents UK, she will be responsible for Novagraaf ’s patent division across English-speaking markets.
Farrand was a partner at a UK law firm before joining Novagraaf as managing director, trademarks UK. He will lead the company’s trademark division.
Cooke and Farrand will be both based in the UK.
Novagraaf ’s global chief executive officer, Lutgarde Liezenberg, said: “Appointing [Cooke and Farrand] is the first in a number of key steps in Novagraaf ’s overall strategy to expand in the UK market.”
