IT Services
The IT facilities and online services provided by the University are an important part of your experience as a postgraduate student:whether to use specialist software,write essays or dissertations, access information on theweb, or to communicatewith staff, fellowstudents, your friends and family. IT Services is committed to providing a high-quality comprehensive computer service to all staff and students in the University.
We provide youwith a St Andrews computer account giving access to computing facilities including the University’s student email service SaintMail, Internet access, learningmaterials and e-resources, and personal secure file storage. Access to these online services is collected together in the University’s student portal iSaint, and is accessible any time and anywhere.
We give you comprehensive information in the formof our handy pocket-sized Quick Guide for Students, supplemented with extensiveweb-based support to assist you in using the facilities. Our friendly IT Helpdesk staff, based in the Library, are there for those occasionswhen youmight need a littlemore help: they can give you support via theweb, by email, over the telephone and in person. If you find that your IT equipment is in need of repair,we provide a comprehensive service at our PC Clinic,where for a reasonable fee our technical staffwill carry out diagnosis and repair.
If youwould like to enhance your IT skillswe have a range of tutor-led classes, covering topics including those particularly relevant to research such as data standards; or if youwould prefer to study at your own pacewe provide studymaterials for a range of common software. We also contribute to the GRADskills programme. There is an Arts Computing Advisor to support computer-related research in Faculty of Arts Schools, and a separateweb server to host local research and teaching projectswithin the Faculty of Arts.
Many University Schools provide their own IT facilities; several have their own internal computing officers for local support and collaboration. In additionwe provide a number of open-access PC classrooms across the University. The modernWindows-based PCs all run a range of software, including specialisedmaterials for certain Schools; they have a fast connection to the University network and the Internet, and are centrallymanaged to keep you safe and secure. Each computer roomhas scanning and printing facilities.
We can provide email andweb spaces for collaborative groups aswell as for individual use, alongwith blogs,wikis and videoconferencing facilities.
If youwant to use your own computer, ourwireless service covers all buildings across campus, and all rooms in our residences benefit froma fasterwired connection to the network. When you are away fromthe University, you can reach our network via broadband orwireless connection; a VPN connectionwill then give you full access to all the services available on our network.
The range of other softwaremade available by IT Services currently includes the statistical packages SPSS andMinitab; programming languages Fortran 90, C, C++, Perl and Python and PHP are available,MySQL for databases, and the LaTeX type-setting package. For bibliographicmanagement, EndNote and RefWorks are in usewithin the University.
Disability support is provided, including a special needs computer roomand Alternative Format Suite (for converting printedmaterial into other forms, such as Daisy files).
