English Language Teaching


English Language Requirements If your first language is not English youmust provide uswith evidence of proficiency inwritten and spoken English aswell asmeeting our other entrance requirements. Thiswill generallymean showing that you have achieved a satisfactory result in a recognised test of English language for example IELTS, UCLES CAE or CPE. Most of our postgraduate programmes require a score of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent. You should submit the relevant certificatewith your application, if possible, or supply the Test Report Formnumber. Test scoresmust be notified to the Postgraduate Recruitment & Admissions Teambefore you arrive in St Andrews. Youmay also be required to attend one of the University’s pre-sessional programmes, as a condition of entry (see below). Alternatively,wemay decide to interviewyou.


Pre-sessional Courses Before the first semester, the English Language Teaching Centre (ELT) provides a four-week and a ten-week English and Study Skills course. These are designed to help students develop and extend their language skills in the context of their academic disciplines,with emphasis on writing styles, particularly essay and reportwriting and referencing conventions, aswell as presentation skills and idiomatic English. The courses also provide an enjoyable orientation to life in St Andrews and an opportunity tomeet other students and become familiarwith the University before the semester begins. If you are an international studentwhose first language is not English, you are strongly recommended to attend. For some programmes, if your IELTS or TOEFL score is slightly belowour ‘asking rate’, your offermay specify attendance on a pre-sessional programme as a condition of entry. Pre-Masters Courses If you are thinking about studying on a postgraduateMasters programme in St Andrews (or another UK university) the Centre for International Foundation Programmes offers a number of programmes to help you develop your English language, academic knowledge and study skills to the required level. If you need to upgrade both your language skills and your academic qualifications and intend to study a business-related programme,we offer the Postgraduate Diploma in Business and English,whichwill allowyou to progress to aMasters programme. Attendance on the above coursesmay be set as a condition of entry to a postgraduate programme.


In-sessional Language Support Service The ELT Centre, through the In-sessional English Language Support Service (IELSS) offers free language support to international students in a variety ofways. Studentsmay sign up for dedicated one-to-one support tutorialswith our language support co-ordinator;we offer advice sessions and workshops on academicwriting, citing, referencing, avoiding plagiarism and academicmisconduct, aswell as grammar and pronunciation;we provide support for all language issues associatedwithwriting dissertations and theses. We can provide group teaching, focusing on a specific subject area, if requested, andwe can provide opportunities for practising speaking skills, particularly in the context of presentations and interviews.
