2011-12 MACUL Grants Awarded


Congratulations to the following MACUL Grant Recipients! These grant winners will be posting podcasts about their projects on the MI Learning site on iTunes U in 2012-13. Watch for a new MACUL Grant cycle in Spring 2012 at www.macul.org.


Amy Baad ............................................$1390 Clinton County RESA


10 Kindles will be used to provide acces- sible instructional material to students with print disabilities through the use of Kindles and Bookshare. One teacher and two eligible students from each high school in the county will participate, shar- ing their experiences and training other qualified students. The use of Bookshare to obtain accessible instructional materials resulting in improved academic perfor- mance will increase exponentially.


Jason Bobis ............................................$680 Crestwood High School


34 Medialink USB Bluetooth Adapters will be used to help students personalize their blog and 21st Century Workplace project. Students will be able to add media rich content (pictures, video feeds, voice data, etc.) from devices including cell phones, to share and reflect upon their work. This encourages students to improve their proj- ects whether in or out of the classroom.


Karen Bosch .........................................$1497 Southfield Christian School


3 iPads (16 GB) with Wi-Fi, styluses and iTunes gift cards will be used in the “Creative APP-titudes” project to develop activities that foster creativity in elementary students by using iPads to link technology and art with classroom disciplines. Students will use digital draw- ing and artistic iPad tools and a variety of camera and recording tools to document and evaluate their artwork in creative mul- timedia projects.

4 Toshiba Satellite laptops, each with case & wireless mouse will be used in high school drafting and computer-aided design courses to allow students who do not have access to adequate computers at home to continue their design work outside of class.

A SMART Board 680 will help increase student achievement and subject area mastery in math and science by using technology as an engagement tool, hands- on resource, and integrated component of core content curriculum. This addresses the technology plan goals of providing technology support, resources and integra- tion in the areas of math and science.

Bridgeport-Spaulding Community Schools An iPad2, accessories and educational applications will be purchased for students having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), mutism, and speech/language deficits. The use of this technology in speech/ language therapy motivates students who have difficulty communicating effectively to progress at their optimal potential in therapy.

2 iPads (16 GB) with Wi-Fi, covers, cam- era kit, wireless keyboards and mouse will be used by students to educate the public about chemistry. Students will research, record data, and develop collaborative pre- sentations and movies to be shown to the community.

An iMac Desktop Computer will be used to help students participate in Rock Our World (ROW), www.rockourworld.org, a collaborative project connecting class- rooms and helping students see across the globe. Students meet in video chats, discuss themes (such as, peace) and share information about their school and coun- try. They create a short video showcasing their interpretation of the theme that is

shown at International Family Night, a Ustream broadcast, the final event of ROW.

3 iPads (16 GB) will be used to help students with physical or other health impairments increase learning, engage- ment, and accessibility to the curriculum. Students will be able to participate more effectively in their general education classes, be more independent, and access a more integrated learning experience.

A MacBook Air with Microsoft Office will be used so the instructor and stu- dents can create instructional videos that demonstrate understanding of the writ- ing process, the effective use of reading strategies, and the elements of literature. Students will be able to view, rewind, and view lessons again allowing a better chance of successfully meeting class objectives.

12 Digital Cameras, SD cards, 35 head- phones, 1 Multimedia Speaker will help students become effective digital storytell- ers and the student body at large make wise behavior choices. Eighth grade stu- dents will take photos of what the Positive Behavior Intervention Support system (4 Be’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Your Best, and Be Kind) looks like and create video tutorials to be shown during weekly video announcements.
