“It was fun volunteering plus I learned a lot about areas that are interesting to me – biology and animals,” said Romano. “It felt good to help the zoo too because they are having a hard time raising money and need all the volunteers they can get.”

Both students said their experience at Elmwood Park Zoo strengthened their resolve to volunteer in their spare time. They also agreed that it helped them get to know their classmates and build a bond with their fellow Explorer Team members.

“This was the first time I ever really did something like this,” said Friday. “I definitely want to keep volunteering at the zoo and other places. It was a great experience!”

Spotlighting Success: Learning Outside the Classroom Walls

Savannah Friday and Christina Romano did not know that being in seventh grade at Penndale Middle School meant spending time with exotic animals, but it did! The two girls and about 20 of their classmates in the Explorers Team volunteered their valuable weekend time to assist at the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown.

“Our science teacher Mrs. Guidotti is a docent at the zoo and she asked if we’d like to help,” said Friday. “I had lots of fun volunteering with younger children at the zoo’s Halloween activities.”

Nancy Guidotti, Penndale Middle School science teacher, asked for volunteers for zoo activities in the fall and spring. Later in the year, she honored volunteers with special certificates recognizing their service.
